Bob Barr Running for President??
I cannot make this kind of (excrement) up: Bob Barr, our old nemesis from Georgia, is running for President of the United States … as a LIBERTARIAN!!! I couldn’t believe it when I heard it on the radio Saturday: the former congressman who tried so hard to ban Wiccans and Pagans in the military from worshipping on post is trying to convince the Libertarian Party he is one of them.
Certainly y’all have NOT forgotten the (excrement) he pulled from 1999 through 2000! I know I will not forget, as I was in AIT at Fort Gordon, Georgia when things really heated up in the spring of 1999 and the information came out that the Sacred Well celebrants held the vernal equinox (Oestara) on Fort Hood, Texas land with the base’s full permission and the support of the chaplain. Bob Barr immediately sent a letter to Hood’s commanding general asking him to “stop this nonsense” and even introduced an amendment to a defense bill that would “forbid Wiccan worship on military bases.”
While the flap continued through the spring, Barr won the undesirable “Burning Times Award” as well as the 1999 Equinine Posterior Achievement Award (no official link at People for the American Way website). Google could find no announcement that Barr has ever apologized for his behavior or words.
Naturally, the whole flap about Bob Barr wanting to deny military Wiccans their religious freedom is conveniently left off of his current website. In fact, his “about” page says:
Bob Barr works tirelessly to help preserve our fundamental right to privacy and our other civil liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.
Either A) Bob Barr is blatantly lying and is the same person who earned infamy in 1999 by stridently calling for the suppression of soldiers’ rights to worship as they believed on military installations; or B) Bob Barr still owes us Wiccans and Pagans a sincere, heart-felt apology.
Which is it, Bob?

And he’s running as a libertarian? Strange. My husband’s a libertarian and writes once a week for a libertarian group blog. I’ll mention this to him see if he thinks it’s something to address (I don’t think he likes Barr anyway).
Yes, please do have him mention it. Most of the Libertarians are completely ignoring his past assaults on individual liberty! And if Mr M is really connected, find out if Bob Barr has ever even thought of issuing a public apology for the public firestorm he created in 1999.
I think it’s both. I think he’s blatantly lying, then again, most politicians do, and I think he owes us a sincere, heart-felt apology for his actions. I also don’t think the Libertarian party should permit him to run under their banner until he makes that apology.
He claims to have reformed, to have seen the light. There are many libertarians who are not sure that that is the case, that his conversion is genuine. For one thing he refuses to answer any questions on the topic of Wicca.
There are some Libertarians (liberventionists actually who want to water down the platform and remove anything that might be controversial) who want Barr simply because he can get votes. The rest of us think that ideas matter.
The discussion on Libertarian forums is quite heated between those who want Barr to answer those questions and those who say that we are wrong to want an answer to those questions.
It is becoming apparent that the closest Barr is to libertarian is that he’s a federalist, believes that the States hold more power than the Federal Government (which many libertairans beleive) but want State level theocracy (which many libertarians do NOT believe).
I don’t care if he makes an apology or not. This is NOT what the Libertarian party was intended to stand for. This man is a true unamerican scumbag. I would just as soon vote for Bush to a 3rd term…
